We made our launches from launch area 9. They were Zunis, once used by the air force to as surface to air missiles to blow up bunkers. When we use them, they reach 2 and a half times the speed of sound, and travel up about 6 kilometres.

Here's some pictures from the top of the bunker at launch area 9. First, the outback ...

And a crowd of people around the launch rack ...

Conversion of the rocket has just been finished :

Here's where we prepared the target for the rockets :

And here the obeservation point, from where we watched the rockets get launched :

But, sadly, I didn't get a photo the Zunis getting launched ! I need more experience with my recently acquired digital camera ! You'll have to go to the asri web pages for a picture of one going off

As it happened, not one of the rockets hit the target ! Why ? Well, the weight distribution in the rockets was a bit off, and the rockets went unstable as they reached the speed of sound. They'd go straight, and then suddenly, dart off - either up, down, left or right (that's because of the original orientation of the fins).

But one of them did reach the ground, just in front of the target. There was a small trench. Yes, you'd expect it to be more spectacular - but it was not ...

Anyway, here's a photo of the little trench ...
